AR BAR
Invited competition entry in-
association with the Architecture
Foundation & 100%Design
Frustrated by the restrictions
imposed on us by the economic
downturn and an increasingly risk-
adverse society, we have been
forced to search for alternative
ways to experience the world that
we want to live in. Our concept for
the Central Bar at 100% Design
exploits the potential of
‘Augmented Reality’ to realise our
ambition.
In response to a growing ‘Neo-
conservatism’ in design (and
especially in architecture) our
proposal is highly crafted and
highly ornamental - a return to the
opulence of the Baroque period
that is unimaginable for most
commissions.
Whilst everything we see around
us is the result of a highly
regulated society, Augmented
Reality offers limitless possibilities
for the future of architecture - a
way to achieve the otherwise
impossible.
Augmented codes (or markers) are
simplified barcodes that, when
viewed through an iPhone or smart
phone allow the viewer to
experience an additional layer to
reality. We have exploited this
technology to provide an
experience of delight and wonder
for the audience of 100% Design.
Anamorphic projection is used to
abstract the AR codes across all
surfaces of the bar so that they are
distorted from all but selected
viewing positions. Only from these
positions will our true vision for the
bar become apparent.
