A week at Hotel d’Offset
Team : Niall Gallacher
A 10km project in London
speculates on how a new kind of
inhabitation might be born out of
this dilemma. At The Hotel
d’Offset: where commercial
Imperative can turn community
provider, London’s corporate
population are offered investment
in a hotel of double occupancy, its
daily use split in two according to
day/night working patterns. Banker
may co-occupy with bank cleaner,
never meeting but sustaining each
other’s place in the by the
consequent offset of computer
travel emissions or municipal
housing shortage.
The hotel stretches from Charing
Cross to City Airport, a viaduct of
convenient compromise, a
megastructure reinterpreted
according to a 21st century
doctrine of local responsibility. It is
a city sized proposition built out of
a room-sized idea, reflecting an
urban future in which compromise
is not a moral choice but a
business decision.
